The work is particularly valuable for its information on the poets of Iran, Transoxiana, and the Indian subcontinent who were contemporary with the author. To date, only the Lahore manuscript and a transcription prepared by Nafisi are known to survive. The published edition of the work was based solely on Nafisi’s transcription, and many of the transcription’s errors and omissions consequently entered the printed text. The present study, supplements the limited existing information about Muḥammad-ʿĀrif Bukhārāʾī, and critically re-examines a number of previously accepted but inaccurate claims. For example, the author’s pen name has repeatedly been recorded as “Liqāʾī,”, whereas researchers and critical editors edited and changed it as “Baqāʾī.” Likewise, contrary to earlier claims that he entered India in 979/1571–72, available evidence suggests that this journey most probably took place in 999/1591; The article also evaluates the textual history and previous edition of Majma’ al-Fuẓalāʾ, demonstrating the necessity of preparing a new critical edition on account of numerous textual problems, including missing biographies, omissions of prose passages and verses, erroneous readings, and the absence of an adequate scholarly introduction and annotations. Finally, the study briefly outlines the editorial principles of the new edition and introduces its major supplementary sections, including the introduction, appendices, annotations, and indices. مجمع‌الفضلای محمدعارف بخارایی ازجمله تذکره‌های عمومی در قرن 10-11 ق است که اطلاعات آن به‌ویژه در بخش‌های مربوط به شاعران ایران، ماوراءالنهر و هند که با مؤلف معاصر بوده‌اند، ارزش فراوانی دارد. تا کنون از این تذکرۀ مهم فقط نسخۀ لاهور و رونویس نفیسی شناسایی شده که متن آن پیش‌ازاین فقط بر اساس رونویس نفیسی چاپ شده، اما اشتباهات و نقص‌های رونویس به چاپی آن هم نفوذ کرده است. در این مقاله اولاً اطلاعات ناقص پیشین دربارۀ محمدعارف تکمیل و برخی از مطالب نادرست قبلی نقد و اصلاح شده است، مثلاً تخلص او در هر نسخه بیش از ده بار لقایی ثبت شده اما محققان و مصححان آن را به بقایی تغییر داده‌اند یا وی نه در سال 979 ق بلکه در تاریخ 999 ق وارد هند شده است؛ ثانیاً تذکرۀ مجمع‌الفضلا از لحاظ کتابشناسی و نسخه‌شناسی هم بررسی شده و ضرورت تصحیح مجدد آن بر اساس چهار دلیل زیر یادآوری شده است: 1- افتادگی یا فقدان کامل یا بخش اعظم برخی از سرگذشت‌ها 2- نبود و نقص برخی از جملات و ابیات 3- ضبط‌های مشکوک و مغلوط 4- کمبود مقدمۀ لازم و تعلیقات مفید؛ ثالثاً روش تصحیح تازۀ مجمع‌الفضلا به‌اختصار بیان شده و به بخش‌های مبسوط آن مثل مقدمه، تعلیقات و فهارس اشاره شده است.
