Abstract

Examining the ties between Persian Dari poetry and Iranian poetry in the pre-Islamic era is one the key topics that has attracted the attention of some domestic and foreign researchers. Some questions about Iranian poetry in the pre-Islamic era are linked to formal and structural elements, like meter and rhyme. Some studies show that ancient Iranian poetry generally lacked rhyme. Now, the question arises whether the sequence of this “absence of rhyme” has been extended to post-Islamic Persian or Arabic poetry. In this paper, an incredible example of poetry by the Iranian Abu Nuwas is discussed, which is in Arabic and lacks rhyme. This remarkable example has been mentioned in the book Al-Umda fi Mahasen al-Shi'r wa 'Adabih, authored by Ibn Rashiq al-Qayrawani. Since Abu Nuwas was Iranian, he may have taken this feature from that tradition. It can be said that this is the first blank verse written in the Islamic world.
