Abstract
The common thread across all arts, and what fundamentally constitutes an artistic work, lies in the artistic devices—techniques and strategies employed by artists in their creations. Calligraphy, particularly the Nasta‘liq script, is among the most traditional Iranian arts, historically intertwined with Persian poetry. Evidence suggests that many poets were also calligraphers, and vice versa. The proximity between these two arts extends beyond content, revealing itself in the shared use of similar artistic devices. Some of the aesthetic strategies in Persian poetry relate to figures of thought, which enhances coherence through semantic associations and creates a form of "semantic music." For many of these poetic devices, equivalent techniques can be found within the Nasta‘liq script. This descriptive-analytical and comparative study aims to illustrate these similarities despite differences in the expressive domains of the two arts. The central question is: How do artistic devices akin to the figures of thought of poetry manifest in Nasta‘liq calligraphy? To address this, works by prominent calligraphers from various periods and formats, representing Nasta‘liq, were analyzed. Results indicate that artistic devices similar to hyperbole, visualization, ambiguity, citation, phonosemantics, and poetic signature—the essential figures of thought in Persian poetry—are also evident in Nasta‘liq calligraphy.
