Revision of the Role and Function of Mythic Reflection in the Works of Four Prominent Romantic Poets of Afghanistan

Abstract
Myths—narrative symbols and culturally shaped images—serve as rich reservoirs of metaphors, patterns, and cultural archetypes that expand the semantic and rhetorical layers of literary works. They offer poets the opportunity to bridge past and present, inviting readers on a journey through time and culture. Throughout the history of Persian poetry, these cultural elements have been widely reflected and have played a significant role in imagery and thematic development. In contemporary Afghan poetry as well, myth has appeared with diverse roles and functions; poets, each through their own approaches, have drawn upon mythic concepts to enrich and regenerate meaning. Accordingly, this study seeks—based on library sources and through a descriptive-analytical method—to examine how the pioneers of Afghan Romantic poetry employ mythological elements in their works. The findings indicate that the reflection of myth in Afghan Romantic poetry not only revitalizes and strengthens national–cultural identity but also fulfills various functions such as model-making, sociopolitical critique, creating continuity between past and present, reinforcing semantic and rhetorical depth, expressing abstract concepts, evoking nostalgic emotions, and articulating mystical and aesthetic ideas.
