The Role of Narrative in Integrating Historiographic Metafiction and Magical Realism (A Case Study of Bijan Najdi’s “E‘tesām al-Saltaneh”)

Abstract
Focusing on Bijan Najdi’s short story “E‘tesām al-Saltaneh,” this article examines the ways in which the author employs the techniques of historiographic metafiction and magical realism. The central aim is to demonstrate how the convergence of these two narrative modes—through the use of specific techniques—disrupts stabilized, authoritative historical narratives and enables a multilayered, critical, and reflexive rereading of the past; a rereading that liberates history from the dominance of power-driven discourse and makes room for the voices that have been marginalized or silenced.
Through a narratological approach, the article analyzes how Najdi challenges the formal structure of history by using metafictional strategies such as the self-conscious narrator, nonlinear narration, the personification of objects, and frame-breaking. Alongside these strategies, the elements of magical realism—including symbolic dreams, poetic language, metaphorical eroticism, and the fluid interplay between reality and imagination—construct a narrative world in which the boundaries among memory, myth, and history gradually dissolve. The synthesis of these two modes not only releases historical perception from institutionalized and monologic frameworks but also transforms the reader’s position from passive recipient to active meaning-maker. The findings show that Najdi approaches history not as an objective report of events but as a literary and critical act of re-creation—an act aimed at reviving silenced voices in the collective memory and interrogating dominant historical narratives.
