Reflection on the Persian language and its functions is a relatively recent phenomenon. Until the intellectual awakening of the mid-Qajar era, Iranians rarely wrote about or critically examined Persian, and the limited evidence of such attention is mainly found in biographical anthologies. From the mid-Qajar period onward, however, discourse surrounding Persian expanded considerably, accompanied by a significant transformation in perceptions of the language. Earlier views that regarded Persian as supplementary to Arabic or marked by deficiencies gradually gave way to claims of its superiority and sanctity. This study examines the evolution of discourse on the Persian language from the Safavid period onward through an analysis of literary and scholarly works, including biographical anthologies, essays, and related texts. It identifies dominant propositions concerning Persian in different historical periods and, through a discourse-analytic approach, explores the factors underlying their transformation. The study argues that the fundamental rupture in perceptions of Persian emerged with its new role from the mid-Qajar period onward. Confronted with the rise of the modern West, Iranian intellectuals increasingly reconsidered the foundations of collective identity. The traditional religion-based conception of identity gradually gave way to an identity increasingly centered on language. Consequently, Persian acquired new political and national significance: it was no longer viewed merely as supplementary to Arabic, but increasingly as the national language of Iran and, eventually, as a language endowed with cultural and sacred value.
