Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive report on the scope and characteristics of Safavid-era research conducted within the academic record of the Department of Persian Language and Literature at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, from its establishment in 1955 to October 2025. Employing an analytical–statistical approach, the article examines all works produced in this department—books, articles, dissertations, and theses—related to the Safavid period from four perspectives: historical and geographical scope; research sources and corpora; subject matter and methodological orientation; and formative factors and contextual backgrounds.
The study aims to identify which historical spans and literary domains of the Safavid era have received the most attention, which primary sources of that period have been examined, and to what extent researchers’ approaches align with previous scholarship and dominant perspectives on Safavid literature and history. Through this analysis, major research trends as well as existing gaps within the field of Safavid literary studies are revealed.
