Reconstructing Shams-i Tabrizi’s Hermeneutical Theory through an Examination of His Views on the Necessity of Interpretation

Abstract

An important concern in contemporary hermeneutics revolves around understanding the connection between classical texts and us. How can an interpreter establish a link with these texts, and what path should be taken to approach them? Today, some prominent scholars of interpretation argue that the interpreter enters into a dialogue with the text by presenting questions and thus engages it in an inquiry. In line with this perspective, the present study raises the following question regarding Maqālāt-e Shams (The Discourses of Shams Tabrizi): why is interpretation necessary? Even though Shams’ discussions on interpretation appear scattered, at least two justifications for this question can be identified from his work. First, the variety of perspectives that exist among humans, and second, observance of station (riʿāyat-i maqām). Shams considers these two factors as reasons why certain statements require interpretation. Given his special linguistic application, he employs notable expressions to express his ideas, some of which are analyzed in this article. This study aims to reconstruct the hermeneutical theory of Shams Tabrizi, if his insights may be termed a “theory”.
