Critical criminology locates the root causes of crime within the unequal distribution of power in society. Gender-based approaches, as a major strand of critical criminology, examine how gender influences patterns of offending, punishment, and responses from the criminal justice system. This study seeks to explore gender-focused criminological theories through an analytical reading of the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. To achieve a deeper understanding of the text, the study employs a qualitative content analysis methodology. The findings reveal that crimes against women in the novel are socially constructed mechanisms designed to enforce gender domination. Crimes committed by powerful actors—those occupying positions of authority and trust—are largely ignored, while offenses committed by marginalized individuals, particularly women, are met with zero tolerance. The Taliban regime in the novel criminalizes certain female customs and, through the politicization of culture, creates conditions conducive to acts of resistance-based deviance. Furthermore, the cultural imperatives surrounding honor and the control of female behavior give rise to honor killings and domestic violence, which become normalized within the social fabric. Women's criminality in this context emerges as a byproduct of economic dependency, cultural pressure, and patriarchal hegemony. As such, effective prevention strategies for women's offending must address structural reform and cultural reconfiguration.
