Abstract
Before the discovery of the unique manuscript of Azod Ṣarraf’s divan, his poetry, including his versified Sindbadnameh, was attributed to Azod Yazdi. His independent identity also remained unknown. It is now established that Azod Ṣarraf was a later poet than Azod Yazdi. He was a contemporary of Ḥafez and held an administrative position at the court of the Muzaffarids for years. Their divans contain mutual remonstrances, implying accusations of plagiarism. The striking similarities and shared motifs in the poetry of Ḥāfiẓ and Azod Ṣarraf suggest an inevitable rivalry and contention between them. It appears that the most prominent instance of the term Modda’i (claimant) in Hafez’s poetry refers to Azod Ṣarraf. The resemblance between Azod and Ḥafeẓ is not limited to their poetry; both held official positions in the Muzaffarid administration, their birth and death occurred within close temporal proximity, and it is highly probable that they were born in the same city. Examining the life and poetry of Azod Ṣarraf not only sheds light on a forgotten poet but also provides valuable insights into Ḥafeẓ’s standing within the Muzaffarid court and his literary conflicts with contemporary poets. This study, through a descriptive-analytical approach and content analysis, explores for the first time the dimensions of Azod and Ḥafeẓ’s rivalry as reflected in their verses.
