The Shahnameh of Ferdowsi represents a comprehensive anthology of Iranian customs, traditions, myths, cultural paradigms, principles of governance, historical narratives, and other pre-Islamic elements intrinsic to the Iranian plateau. The artistic merit and expressive quality of this monumental work have significantly contributed to the sustained relevance of these concepts among the inhabitants of the region. Historically, this influence has transcended mere cultural dimensions, extending its ramifications into the realm of statecraft as well. Given the ambiguous delineation between history, epic, and myth that persists into contemporary discourse, the portrayal of the ideal monarch and heroic archetypes has engendered a collective demand within public consciousness. Consequently, historians, poets, and the propaganda machinery of various dynasties or rulers have been compelled to address this demand.
During the nascent stages of the Safavid period, the profound influence of the Shahnameh on both the populace and Shah Ismail prompted historians such as Amini Heravi to emulate and draw inspiration from Ferdowsi's stylistic methodologies. These include the utilization of verse, allusion, metaphor, hyperbole, and simile, in conjunction with his narrative techniques concerning epic heroes. Such techniques encompass themes of divine attribution, the luminosity of kingship, detailed portrayals of feasts, battles, and hunts, as well as the aesthetic representation of the king and his retinue. This artistic appropriation not only reflects a reverence for Ferdowsi's legacy but also illustrates the enduring impact of his work on the historiographical practices of subsequent Iranian scholars.
