Among the interdisciplinary studies, the sociology of literature is a modern approach in literary criticism that shows the interaction between society and literature. This study explores one of the social issues in “Hamsaye’ha” based on the theories of Putnam. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical method, analyzing the novel's text with references to sociological concepts. The study seeks to answer: What are the roots of the social capital depicted by Mahmoud? How are the components of social capital (trust, participation, and norms) reflected in the novel? The results indicate that the most influential factors affecting social capital in the novel are the nationalization of the oil industry, and the formation and activities of various political parties in Iran, particularly the Tudeh Party. Conversely, the primary causes of anti-social-capital elements include the British occupation of Khuzestan, the elimination of governmental and parliamentary power by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and the inefficiency of the government across different institutions. Trust and its subcategories (fundamental, interpersonal, and abstract trust) are portrayed negatively as widespread distrust. However, the subcomponent of collaboration is positive, reflecting strong altruism and solidarity within Iranian society. The subcomponents of social support, feelings of influence and social efficacy, and social mediation exhibit varying degrees of positivity. The positivity of these subcomponents reflects positive interactions and high moral and human values within Iranian society.
